There are 2,432,902,008,176,640,000 possible variants for planning a delivery tour with only 20 parcels. Humans cannot think these through alone – nevertheless the “human factor” remains irreplaceable in many logistic systems.
Logistics costs account for around 16 percent of a company’s total costs, while inventory costs account for around 50 percent of logistics costs. In this context, the IT service provider Brockhaus AG is enhancing its inventory planning together with the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT.
“Humans and machine – an inseparable relationship” was the topic of a course organised by the Leibniz Researc Centre for Working Environment and Human Factors at the TU Dortmund (IfADo) as part of the German Student Academy in the summer of 2018.
The Dortmund Council had adopted the Science Master Plan 2013 which included the decision to implement 100 different measures. Five years after the start the evaluation report is now available. According to the report, the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT will play a “decisive role in the framework of comprehensive research planning”.
The Center of Excellence Logistics and IT has developed an “Escape Game” to convey the latest logistic-technologies, in which participants use various innovative technologies to crack locks and codes.
Machine learning is the key to intelligent logistics. With the establishment of a Research Clan for machine learning, the Center of Excellence Logistics and IT) is responding to the rapid development of this new basic technology.
